“Becoming Well” Podcast Launches

06.01.2020

New Moody Radio podcast hosted by Moody professors deals with mental health and the Christian faith.

A new podcast recently launched by Moody Radio called Becoming Well comes during a season when peace and confidence feel elusive. The podcast, hosted by Moody professors, Dr. Deb Gorton and Dr. Mary Hendrickson, helps listeners discover how the truth of God’s Word intersects with their mental health and wellbeing in every season.

“When so much in our world feels out of control, Moody Radio is committed to bringing listeners back to our God of hope who is sovereign and in control from generation to generation,” said Doug Hastings, vice president of Moody Radio. “We began planning for this podcast several months ago, and are amazed and grateful how the Lord directed our steps to launch it at a time when it is needed. This podcast provides honest and needed conversations about mental health and the Christian faith, especially during this challenging season.”

Hosted by Moody professors, Dr. Deb Gorton and Dr. Mary Hendrickson, the timely, new podcast released in May, during the heart of Mental Health Awareness Month. It aims to help anyone who wants to see change in their lives—change in relationships, in emotions, and faith in God—see it through and experience radical transformation in the process.

The 30-minute podcast will release new episodes weekly, and is a broadcast collaboration between Moody Radio and the MTS Counseling Center, both located on the campus of Moody Bible Institute in downtown Chicago.

Host Dr. Deb Gorton, who directs the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Moody Theological Seminary, as well as the MTS Counseling Center, combines her background as a clinical psychologist, in-class experiences as a professor, and honest conversations with her peers and colleagues about mental health, faith, and how they go hand-in-hand.

“In the midst of the heartache and pain we encounter each day, and especially now during this pandemic, we understand the need to talk about mental health issues and questions as believers, as the Church,” says Dr. Gorton. “Mary and I are so excited to meet with our listeners in their pain and joy, to help them face their fear while pursuing their purpose, showing them through conversations, interviews, and personal stories, that we can hold conflicting emotions and still experience healing, freedom, and joy when we approach our mental health from a biblical perspective.”

Co-host Dr. Mary Hendrickson, who serves as assistant professor of Moody Bible Institute’s Human Services program, is also passionate about advocating for quality mental health services across socio-economic borders, and within underserved, urban populations.

“Whether you are a student, parent, ministry leader, professional, mental health counselor, or lay-person, we all need emotional balance to function as a community,” says Dr. Hendrickson. “Specifically, during these unprecedented times, we have been involuntarily confronted with isolation, uncertainty, grief and loss. Dr. Gorton and I seek to uncover, and even normalize discussions surrounding mental health through a biblical framework. You will hear our personal stories, as well as what we have learned through our journeys as counselors, clients, and educators.”
