This past February, Moody celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Today in the Word devotional magazine.
“This is a significant milestone when you realize the many months, days and hours of Bible study represented,” said Greg Thornton, interim president of Moody and senior vice president of media. “Today in the Word is incredibly special because it represents a central belief at Moody that everyone can and should be a student of the Word.”
Thirty years ago, in February 1988, Moody Bible Institute offered the first issue of Today in the Word monthly devotional. Today in the Word was launched in February because that is the same month at Moody’s annual conference, Founder’s Week.
Now Today in the Word has more than 130,000 print-edition readers each month, as well as 30,000 daily email readers and 30,000 online readers. The devotion is read in 23 countries and received by 1,450 inmates through Set Free Ministries. The devotional is edited by Moody faculty and often written by them as well.
“We celebrate and are humbled by how God has used Today in the Word to take readers into a deeper relationship with God through the study of His Word, added Thornton. “What a joy it is to continue ministering to countless men and women, from readers who are incarcerated to those in retirement homes to corporate executives and widows. God is using Today in the Word in a profound way.”
The mission of Today in the Word has not changed: “Encouraging readers to consistently read, study, and apply God’s Word.” Over the past 30 years Today in the Word has covered each book of the Bible at least twice, delved into various topical studies, and looked into the life and ministry of many Bible characters. Today in the Word strives to be the most informative, insightful and in-depth study of the Bible to apply to the daily life of a believer.
Today in the Word seeks to help people study the Bible daily no matter where they are in their spiritual journey. It walks through the Bible in an easy-to-follow way, giving a Bible passage to read and offering a reflection on that Scripture. It also has an Apply the Word section which helps readers take what they learn and put it into action.
To commemorate this special occasion, Today in the Word created a compilation of Question and Answer columns from past 30 years, and packaged them together in a volume called Do Angels Have Wings? This gift is available to all those who partner by generously supporting the ministry of Today in the Word.
