What are the circulation policies of the music library?

A Moody Bible Institute ID or library card is required to check out items from the Media/Music Library. To apply, please visit the Circulation Desk or call 312-329-4136 for more information.

Please note the following borrowing privileges and loan periods.

1. Only MBI Faculty members may check out reference scores.
2. Only patrons with current MBI IDs or library cards may check-out scores and CDs.
3. Up to 3 reserve items can be checked-out at the Circulation Desk.
4. Illegal duplication of recordings is prohibited. All duplication of recordings must comply with current copyright code.

How is the Dewey Decimal System (DDC) organized?

DDC sorts subjects by numbers. Music is almost always found in the 780s.

Two exceptions are:

• 264.2 - Books for Church Music (working with choir)
• 306.484 - Sociology of Music

The major divisions are:

• 780 - Music
• 781 - General principles and Musical forms (Music theory, music therapy)
• 782 - Vocal music
• 783 - Voice
• 784 - Instrumental ensembles and their music
• 785 - Music for small ensembles/Chamber Music
• 786 - Keyboard, mechanical, electrophonic, percussion instruments
• 787 - Strings
• 788 - Wind Instruments

How do I search the library for music?

Use the advanced search features of the Library Catalog to find music CDs and scores. This special catalog includes search options such as composer and table of contents. It is limited to the Music and Media Library and can be further limited to individual collections such as compact discs and scores.
